Esports organization of the German soccer club, Schalke 04 Esports, has been competing in the League of Legends European Championship since 2016, and they have been fighting for the top five since then.

At the start of this year, it was rumored that Schalke 04 Esports would sell their LEC spot for the next year, but there was no official announcement neither from the organization or Riot Games.

Yesterday, the German organization announced their departure from LEC and revealed that they won’t be participating in LEC Spring 2022. Instead, Team BDS will find a seat in the championship as they bought the slot.

Furthermore, it has been revealed that Schalke 04 Esports and Team BDS made a €26.5 million deal for the LEC slot, which is the second-highest franchise sale in the western League Of Legends community.

According to the statement of Team BDS, they have been negotiating with Schalke 04 Esports for the past five months to buy the slot and stated that they are aiming for the top of the leaderboard.

What will happen to the current roster of Schalke 04 Esports is yet to be determined. Team BDS has the authority to continue with the same roster, as well as bringing out new players and coaching staff.

Here is the official announcement from Schalke 04 Esports:

“Dear Schalke-Fans, Dear LEC-Fans, with great sadness we must announce today that we have finalized the sale of the LEC licence at the end of the Summer Split 2021. In the past months we worked very hard on many different solutions to keep Schalke committed to the LEC and fought for an alternative to this situation, but unfortunately it did not work out and we’re sorry about that.

While Schalke 04 has seen phenomenal growth in the area of esports, specifically the LEC, and has been very happy with the project thus far, the Covidl9-pandemic and the relegation of the football club have had massive financial consequences for this historic club, thus leaving the management with no other option.

Starting in 2022, Team BDS will join the LEC. The LEC licence will be sold for €26.5 million. We wish Team BDS the best of luck and lots of success in Europe’s greatest esports league! We also want to thank the numerous applicants that participated in this process. It was a very professionally handled process from all parties involved which ends with a great result for esports and the LEC.

For us, this manifests that our decision-making over the last years, entering the League of Legends space through a traditional sports club, was strategically sound and hope that this journey can be viewed as a showcase for many sports clubs to come.”
