Owen Butterfield, known as “Smooya,” is a 22-year-old British CS:GO player who had played for teams like BIG Clan, Chaos Esports Club, and lastly, Movistar Riders. Since August 2021, he had been looking for a new home.

About two weeks ago, Fnatic announced that they decided to bench their youngster Jack “Jackinho” Ström Mattsson because they wanted to continue competing in the server with a pure AWP player.

Later on, the European organization stated that Smooya will be joining in Jackinho’s absence as a stand-in, and he helped Fnatic to qualify for IEM Winter Closed Qualifiers. However, he left the team afterward due to the agreement between Movistar Riders and Fnatic.

Yesterday, Smooya announced his free agency and simultaneously, he announced that he joined Fnatic on a 3-month trial period, which can be extendible by Fnatic if they think its the right thing to do.

While the 22-year-old AWPer was thanking the team director of Fnatic, Andreas “Samuelsson” Samuelsson, for believing in him, he also mentioned that he will be work hard to be the best version of himself.

Fnatic announced:

CS:GO Roster Update: We’re excited to welcome back Smooya to our AWP position for a 3 month trial with extension rights. We’d like to once again thank Movistar Riders for allowing this to happen. Welcome to the Black and Orange family, Owen!”

Smooya on joining Fnatic:

“For those who enjoyed the British Fnatic flag, you’re about to be really excited for a long time.

This is a situation that I never thought I would see myself in because of my past mistakes throughout my career but all I can say is thank you to Samuelsson for believing in me so much by putting his own reputation on the line to secure this move.

I’m joining with a very open mindset and reasonable expectations for myself and the team, here to work hard every day not only in game but to develop myself as a person too. I’ve been waiting for a chance like this for years and I think now is the perfect time for this to happen.”
